Is it normal to think about mental illness this much?

I find my self kind of diagnosing most people I see. I will even analyze fictional characters sometimes. I will for example say "That character has Aspergers traits." or "Many people in positions of power are sociopaths."

Another theory I have is that Borderline women often end up with mildly aspie men. One more theory is that those with mental illnesses tend to seek out others with mental illness for relationships, friendships, etc.

I also like to observe how traits are passed down through families and how it all develops.

Does anyone else do this?

  • I wonder if you might be mistaking personalities for personality disorders. Do you think that most people have a mental illness/personality disorder?

I don't see any real harm in it (as long as you don't tell people your 'diagnoses!!). It might help you understand other people better as long as you realise that real people are more complex than a list of symptoms. I just get annoyed with everybody being labelled with a personality disorder these days. It's not always warranted.

  • It's interesting that you suggest borderline women get with aspie men. I'm wondering why that is. I'm an aspie and most the girls I attract have had some type of personality disorder. I'm not sure why that is but borderline pd and aspergers are have almost opposite traits. I do tend to hang out around other people with a variety of psychological diagnoses probably because I am more tolerant of interesting people. Borderlines confuse the fuck out of me though even more so than most people.

  • It's wrong to pick at a person's character and try to fit them into the criteria of a mental illness. Only a small percentage of people suffer from mental illness. What you're doing is something a psychiatrist would do - tell everyone that walks into their office they have traits of a mental disorder but don't really give an official diagnosis. Just as long as they're making money off of it.

Although, I do agree that many people in high positions are psychopaths.

  • It's all made up, some people worked it out and then they made up schizophrenia to discredit those people.

  • I would say Borderlines tend to end up with Narcissists or Antisocial types.

  • I try really hard not to think about mental illness, But then the voices return and so do the mariachi playing macaques. Plus they're off-key.
