Is it normal to think, "having sex" means only intercourse?

I've always thought that "having sex" means just having sexual intercourse but I had an interaction with someone that believes that oral, anal and mutual masturbation is all sex. I believe the other things are sexual acts but I don't agree they're sex. What do you guys think?

  • Back when I thought I was a lesbian, I considered fingering and oral to be sex. Straight people almost never consider fingering to be sex. Oral, anal, and "digital" sex aren't sexual intercourse (penis in vagina) but they are sex. Does that make any sense?

I guess it depends on who you ask. You could refer to all of it as "sexual contact", I suppose.

  • If someone tells me he had sex I would think he is telling me he had intercourse. It is not implicit that he did something else but, I would just guess.

  • Bill Clinton, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman".

  • As a lesbian nah I definitely don't agree. If oral or having your fingers inside someone while isn't sex then what is it considered as? Making out? Lol it's sex but not sexual intercourse. Intercourse however is just a penis and a vagina.

  • There all things that I'd expect to have during a night of sex, if it's a 1 night stand it could be called that or it could be called making love but I'd still want to do all those sexual activities

  • "Having sex" isn't strictly confined to intercourse. I think on a instinctual level, sex was simply used to reproduce, but has branched out quite a bit.

    Oral SEX is sex.

    Anal SEX is sex.

Mutual masturbation... is not sex, but is a sexual act.

Homosexuals can and do have sex without having intercourse. There are plenty of types of sex aside from "penis in vagina".
