Is it normal to tear the skin off my hands?

Since about fourth grade, I've had the habit of tearing the skin of my hands... I use a needle or thumbtack to push under the skin of my palms or fingers, then rip the raised skin off... I try to get the most skin possible off before it grows back

Is It Normal?

  • It almost sounds like a pre-cursor to self-harm. Do you know what makes you it?

On the other hand, when I get badly sunburned and start to peel, pulling the skin off in sheets is kind of engrossing.

  • i used to do this before but i wouldn't tear a lot off. I don't think it's normal though.

  • Sometimes I'll eat the skin around a cut I have. I think it's an O.C.D response to seeing loose skin. I don't think it's normal, though. :(

  • Boredom mostly. Occasionally stress. It doesn't hurt though... It's just the first layer if skin, so there's no blood. I don't do it to hurt myself exactly...
