Is it normal to talk about you m.h. with friends and family

does anyone ever talk about mental health with there fried or family. not just the things that piss you off and make you cry but some of the serious life challenges you may experience and how they effect you. do yu feel comfortable enough to bring it up to the people close to you. And if you do how do they react are they positive or negative and if they are negative then do you just shut up and try to get over it?

It can be quite a difficult process working out who can be trusted and who not with mental health issues and in my experience there's rarely or never just one person who will always give you positive support. It's better to spread it over a few people if possible and also to be in touch either in person or by phone with professional counsellors.

Shutting up and getting over it rarely works, so if your experience confiding in friends and family hasn't been positive you need to get support elsewhere.

If you're in Australia there's always Lifeline, a 24 hour a day counselling support service, but I have no idea what's available in other countries. We also have specialised crisis lines for people distressed by sexual assault or family violence, for people under 18, addictions, people feeling suicidal and specific men's lines for men wanting to deal with their own violence. Good luck if you're able to contact an appropriate service for you.

    Yes, with a select few.
