Is it normal to switch gender while online?

Like, I'm a female irl, but online, i can only be a dude. For years now, that's how it's been. I don't think i can ever be female while online.
But, i also act like it's a massive secret. Like, if it got out that I'm female, I'll just never be able to be online and/or everyone will hate me

Yeah, it's pretty normal for people to pretend to be the opposite gender online. It's harmless as long as you're not catfishing people. XD

  • I’d say it’s probably normal and seems harmless. A anonymous site seems to be a good place to disguise yourself and be something else for a change. How I am on here is my true self vagina and all but I don’t particularly care what’s the gender of someone else. I definitely wouldn’t hate someone for wanting to show a masculine side. So tho I can’t relate I see nothing particularly wrong with it.

i understand sticking to being a dude online. as soon as it gets out that you are a girl you will receive a billion pervy messages. seen it happen many times before.

It's usually the other way around. I don't fully believe anyone online is female unless they are using video or audio.

Do ever intend to meet your online friends? If not who cares?

What you're doing is probably more common than you think so. Why do you feel compelled to present yourself as male online. What kinda places do you go to online?

Okay, so why do you feel compelled to present yourself as male online? It's no big deal, and you can do whatever you want, but I'm curious.

I guess it came from when i first got internet as a kid. I had recently read a book series, and so my username was 'TobiasTheNinja'. Although, i have no clue where the ninja came from.
Everyone thought i was a dude, so i kind of accepted it. Now, years later, i still have kept being male.

Right on! I used to go around online with werewolf names about twenty years ago. I think I outgrew it about twelve years ago.

I don't think i can be anyone without the name Tobias. Tobias was the name that started everything for me.

That's what I don't understand. You've always wanted to be a werewolf. But, you regret all the times you dressed up like Little Red Riding Hood (so to speak) when you were younger. I would think Lil Old Red could snap those mean nasty wolves into line pretty fast. Do they just get too sneaky to handle, or what?

Well on google I put my gender as neutral so yeah I guess.

Same! But the thing is, it's pretty easy to be seen as male on the internet, it's basically the default, unless you write a lot like: omg, lol, haha, smiley faces, or just say "im a girl btw!!" (80% chance that's a guy doing the same though) so there is no need to lie or hide it, just keep "girly" things to yourself and let them incorrectly assume.

I don't hate you. You can wear boys underwear and have a boy's first name. That's okay.

You can pee while you are standing up too. Lots of girls do that. The boys don't care. Just make sure the other girls don't know that you do it.
