It can't be that strange. I didn't stop sucking my thumb until around 14 or 15. I saw this one girl sucking her thumb at the lunch table in the 9th grade. Also, someone that works with my Mom still sucks her thumb, and she's in her 40's. It seems like it's more common with females.
I just lost the urge as I matured. The main reason was because I grew out of it, but it took some will power, too.
