It has become a habit, and habits are hard to break. Carry around lollipops or gum or something, and whenever you get the urge to put your thumb in your mouth, put something else in instead. Eventually you will get used to not sucking your thumb, and won't feel the need to do it anymore. But that may be trading one bad habit for another. If you can find the strength in yourself to say no to your thumb sucking, then that would be best. I have this bad habit of running loose string under my fingernails, I've never tried to stop it because I think it is harmless, so when I get the urge, I just satisfy it. But if I did have a reason to stop, I'm sure I could say no to the urges, and they will get weaker and weaker until they are gone.
Is it normal to suck your thumb at the age of 18?
