Yes it is normal to need diapers. I am 61 years old and I still wear diapers. I I was never really potty trained and my parents said it was easier for me to stay in diapers. I always wore cloth diapers and plastic pants to school and had to go to the nurse to get my diapers changed. In school is where I learned to love my diapers I was never in any hurry to get changed and never minded being in a poopy diaper. I always peed and pooped in my pants. I never minded being wet and messy. So to me to wear a diaper that isn't wet and messy wouldn't be normal. So for me a good load in my pants is very normal and I don't mind it being in there because I'm very used to it. I do get diaper changes and I do get diaper rash period but that is also normal for people who need to wear diapers. I happen to be one of them. I wear cloth diapers what plastic panties. They are very thick and I don't even try to hide them under my clothes. You can tell by the bulk that I am diapered. I wear a onesie with snaps in the crotch to help keep my diapers up. So for me it wouldn't be normal if I didn't have a wet and messy diaper on.
