You can get your own place and still give them a helping hand. Still inherit their property when they pass. You don't have to buy a house to move out.
I don't know your situation or how old you are, but I have a cousin of 30'ish still living with his mom and no it's not normal. If she dies, he's fucked cause he never learned to live on his own.
When it comes the point of being dependent of mommy whiping your ass, it's not ok either. You need to have your own place and be your own man. And just as you are scared now, after you are on your own for long enough, you will probably fear moving back home just as much as you fear leaving at the moment.

It'd be a good thing for me to find an apartment not to far so my aging folks can call upon me when (not if) they need me. They are getting more dependent upon me, not me upon them.
