On one hand, I dont think anyone should hit anyone unless its for self-defense.
On the other hand if your parents bought the TV and your living in their house, they get first dibs on what channel they would like to watch.

Absolutely not. As stated above, no one should hit anyone unless it is for self defense. This statement stands -
Having said that, calling your father rude and stupid because he wants to change the channel on his own TV is consequently rude and stupid.
Most likely the son doesn’t have any respect for his father who from time to time decides to slap him around - this is completely understandable. However, to get respect you must give respect. So I think that in this families case (as dysfunctional as it may seem) the loss of respect is cyclical.
Is it normal to still get hit by your parents and not be a minor?
