Is it normal to spoil your cat with food?

In my family we spoil our cat and she gets all the food in the world. She looks a little bit chubby but I think it's ok because she's happy. She gets wet food at night and at midday. She gets refills of expensive dry food although the day. Is it normal that we spoil our cat and let her get fat?

  • Run your hand down your cat's back. If you can't clearly feel her vertebrae, she's overweight.

I've shared a house with quite a few cats over the last 40 years or so, and I've always left good quality dried food out for them at all times. None of those cats have been obese, because - unlike dogs - almost all cats are pretty good at regulating their food intake so they eat what they need and no more.

If the stuff you're feeding your cat is so high in calories that it screws up that self-regulating mechanism and she's obese, that will have long-term effects on her health and longevity. You may enjoy giving her treats and believe that this is demonstrating how much you love her, but actually, you're damaging her health, ensuring that she dies before her time, and probably heading towards expensive vet bills and treatments that neither you nor she will enjoy.

  • Vous êtes responsable de sa santé. L'obésité n'est pas bonne.

  • Sometimes my best friend looks like a furry, feline potato when he's chillin.

    • I watch Butters the Bean on YouTube, he's literally a potato that meows in like a "I'm here" tone

They're really sweet to Butters, that's why I watch

  • Your vet will tell you if your cat's weight is a problem at the annual check up.

If they need to lose weight a good thing to do is stop the unlimited dry biscuits. If you check on the back of the pack, or ask your vet, it will tell you how much your cat needs in a day (remember to take into account the wet food you are giving them)

I always give my cat unlimited dry biscuits whenever she asks for them, but she is still slim. If she gets porky I will cut back.

Keep giving your cat the wet food. People think of it as unhealthy/fatty but for a lot of cats it's their main source of hydration, because they tend not to drink much. Dehydration will be worse for your cat's health than being a bit chubby.

  • There’s a special place in my heart for all big domestic cats but please be sensible, you don’t want to lose your friend sooner than you need to because you over-fed her.

  • I would spoil my cat with attention and toys, I would have ledges she could jump on, a cat fishing pole to give her something to chase, I would give her lotsa cuddles on my heated blanket ☺

  • My dog has eaten human food ever since we got him.
He eats fruit , vegetables , meat , candy , chocolate.
    Whatever we eat.
    He drinks pop & coffee.
He's still very active and chill ; and doesn't get sick from it (which I guess most dogs do).
We introduced him to human food slowly , and by age 2 he was eating almost all human food.
He's eaten pizza and baconators and stuff.
Since I became vegetarian he doesn't really care for my plate of food as much as the others in my household ; since 9/10 times that he gets human food it's usually meat. The odd chocolate bar here and there ; though he loves chips and sweet candy. He dislikes sour candy with a passion ; he does not like spicy food either. He will eat pretty well anything that isn't sour or spicy , and that's about it.
He'll get cereal with us , or oatmeal (which he usually only eats a little bit of).
    It's normal for us.
We've had him since 2013 and he's still hyper and active. He's a puggle (Pug x Beagle).
