It's normal, at least for those knowledgeable enough to use Biblical references and allusions.
As a side note: It always really annoys me when people reference something that implies that Mary Magdalene as being a prostitute before she met Christ. It was a DIFFERENT woman who followed him that used to be a prostitute (I forgot her name). Mary Magdalene was the one with seven devils inside her that Christ got rid of. She was never a prostitute.
