Is it normal to speak at one year old?

This story is about me. My mother and father both corroborate that I could speak, and converse with them, at one year old. I've got children of my own now, and it makes me think that it was pretty unusual.

So is this normal? Are there other babies that could talk this early?

  • Children should be saying their first words around age one and combining 2-3 words around the ages of 2 & 3. I guess my question would be. What do your parents mean by communicating with them? You saying juice if you wanted juice? Or saying my ball to get a ball. This would be typical. If you were actually holding a back and forth conversation with questions and answers I'd say that would be more advanced. I'd be curious to know what a one to two year old would be conversing about?!

  • My son is almost 2 years old and only has about 10-15 words in his vocabulary! My niece set a pretty high standard for the rest of the family!

  • My niece said her first word at 9 months and could have small easy conversations with others by the time she was 18 months. I don't think it's normal, but all children develop at different rates.

  • one of my friends has a two year old son, and he started talking at one, and his three year old can already count to ten, and reconizses peoples faces easily. So, yeah, your kid is normal.

  • Well, my mother told me we were at Sunday School, and I piped up and said " I want a drink of milk." She said everyone was freaking out about me talking that well at one year old.

  • Yeah. That's not a typical sentence for a one year old.
