Is it normal to sort of feel sad when i read that people hate america?

I really feel this way when I am on the internet reading comments and such and see people posting about how stupid Americans are and how much they hate our country. I obviously know I should not take personal offense to these kinds of comments because they do not know me but I still feel offended, it almost feels like when one of your peers mentions they hear someone gossiping about you. I don't dwell on it or anything but my heart sinks when I read it. If it makes a difference my father was in the Air Force for 30 years. Just wondering if anyone else has felt this? Also, maybe some non-americans can comment and tell me some reasons they personally do not like our country? Thanks for the consideration.

Is It Normal?

    • Agreed, it's those Americans who say that the US is the strongest/most important country in the world, that annoy me. And if you disagree with them they will say stupid things like "we'll nuke your country" or "if the US didnt come resque you in WW2 you wouldnt be saying that" etc.
It's those kind of people that give the US a bad name.

  • I am canadian, and the u.s.a drives me crazy because everytime i go to the states they are very ignorant about my country. Our capital city is an hour from the border. we are sooo close but its as if they know nothing of a world outside their own borders. Everytime i talk to an american they are very surprised when they find out we do not live in igloos, ride dog sleds ect.(this has happened in boston, washinton, and many more) Plus that video on you tube, amaricans arnt that stupid, talks for its self. As of myself, I love Canada, I love the 4 seasons, I love the multiculture presence here, I love our international presence, I love the strict gun laws, I love the affordable education and health system, and I love poutine lol.

It would be great if the u.s.a as a whole could just laugh off its mistakes.

  • Our country has been in the spotlight since it came to be. There are people that do stupid things that give us a bad name but that doesn't mean our whole country is like that. Our country is not perfect and other countries shouldn't judge. But they do. America has changed and has lost a lot of its patriotism. We always try to help and get involved but not every country likes that. It never feels good when people criticize you, your family, or your country.

  • I guess because of the powerful position the US has been in, and the ways in which it has used and sometimes abused that power just pisses people off after a while in some way. I'd argue that disliking America usually means disliking the actions of the government or big corporations and not at all the people themselves.
Every country in the world has its issues, but maybe because it's culture is so pervasive more than any other country the US stands out.
The size of the US just means bigger contradictions that an outsider observes. It can seem both the smartest and damned stupidest county at the same time on so many issues that it's baffling.
And to be honest, sometimes it's just down to plain old jealousy.

  • I guess you will have to do better. Is there a country in the world everybody actually loves? no there isn't. There is always somebody somewhere hating somebody else who is elsewhere. But you know, feelings are like that, you kind of cannot control it and never really solve anything.

  • No this is not normal. Most Americans don't notice that everyone hates them.

  • Personally I like America for their music and movie industry and all the cool shit you can buy there. It just sounds amazing when I think of living in NYC (considering how small nz is). But I hate it when American school kids or even adults take surveys or watever and don't know where my country is. Like fuck i know where ur country is why the fuck don't you know where mine is bro.

    • I'm an American and I love NZ. Mt Cook rocks. So does Lake Tekapo, Milford sound, and the city of Christchurch.

  • Its just because the US keep attacking and occupying countries for oil.

  • I understand that. Just try to do your best to make a good impression for Americans. That's all you can do.
