Is it normal to sometimes get temporary blindness after standing up?

Whenever I lay down for a long time and then suddenly stand up I get this blindness that last for about 10 or 15 seconds, I really want to know if this is common in most people because my parents think I may be going blind. I've had this for about a year now and it doesn't really bother me that much, the most harm it's done is hitting my shoulder into the wall.

Is It Normal?

  • The condition is called orthostatic hypotension. Basically, it's a sudden drop in blood pressure after standing up too fast. It can be more pronounced after resting.

  • Some of you are idiots! If you seen a loved one go blind for the first time it wouldnt be funny to you! That is of course, you have a heart!

  • I get this, but also when I'm just walking. My vision will quickly fade to complete darkness and stay that way for a few seconds. It happens quite often and I just kind of got used to it, even continuing what I'm doing through the blindness. though I am curious as to what it may be. I'm always completely sober, I don't drink, so it's nothing to do with that.

  • my mom tells me its cause I'm standing up to fast and the fast motion and change in hight is making me dizzy. i don't know if she's right, but this happens to me too. id say its normal, try standing up slower.

  • It's normal.

Your parents are silly for suggesting it's a sign of you going blind. That's like saying "every time I run into a wall it hurts, it must mean I'm dying".

One time when I was a child, I was stationary for 6 hours on the sofa, suddenly got up and tried to navigate to the kitchen, got half way and fainted. My vision went fuzzy and I just fell. It was only for about 5-10 seconds.

If it bothers you or affects your more than most people, get up more slowly :D

  • This happens to me when I stand up/get up. I get dizzy and then my eyesight fades then I have to hold onto something b/c I feel like I'm going to fall over..but it goes away in 10 seconds.

  • Normal for me. I suffer from low blood pressure

  • I often get up to fast then the blood pressure drops and my eyes go nearly black and i am about to fall over.

  • Quite common, just low blood pressure. Some have it more severe than others like they get blackouts.

  • Just low blood pressure and for a second or two oxygen doesn't reach the brain properly. Not a big deal if it only happens every so often.

  • Stop standing up. It's making you go blind.

  • Yes. It is normal if you are a teen. As an adult it could be a cause of concern. Viagra could help.
