SWIM could have a twitch that forces him/her to snort. Kind of like Tourettes. Snorting and throat clearing are both considered a tic, providing SWIM doesn't have chronic allergies or a sinus infection. SWIM might not be able to control it. You could always ask SWIM in a casual and friendly way as to why he/she is continuously clearing his/her throat. Ask if SWIM has allergies if you want to go about it as sensitively as possible.
