I guess maybe I didn't phrase the question properly because some respondents seemed to think I was asking for approval, which I wasn't.
I was asking if people normally snoop, simply out of curiosity, even though they know they are not supposed to.

No. Most people would consider this unacceptable to do.
The only time I would think this is ok is if you are sure they are stealing your things and are lying about it and you need to look for your stuff.

No, it's not socially acceptable to snoop. I recommend trying to work on being less curious and minding your business if it doesn't effect you.
