Is it normal to smoke indoors with children living in the home?

I didn't think my apartment smelled but when I moved out and saw the pretty white squares on the wall that were hiding behind the pictures, I kind of stopped trusting my nose. But I do live in a climate where rain is the only winter obstacle.
