Is it normal to smoke and take birthcontrol

So I'm 20 years old smoker taking birth control. My mother resently saw something on The Doctors that said that women who smoke and are taking birth control are at an increased risk of heart attack. I know that's true but now she's freaking out. I've tried to tell her it's fine because i'm fit and young and i will eventually get an iud anyway. But of course that doesn't work.
My question:
Is it really okay or am i just trying to make to make myself feel better.
p.s. i have absolutly no intention of quiting.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • You are at a higher risk because of a blood clot causing a heart attack. Smoking thickens the blood and some birth control pills are risky too. I had a blood clot and it's extremely painful!!

Don't know why you need both - the smell of your breath should be enough to keep the men away!

Plus, as you have too much money (as you are able to set fire to all that dosh) you'd be a very expensive commodity for a man!

  • Although I an young 15 but listen. I have study human cycology psychology and human body and chemical reactions. normal ppl thinks its ok but we are all not made the same who know when you start breaking or when its really you think its is just starting and you should get a treatment but when you really it is already over. You are already brokken and couldnt take it back. You can only have 1 consciousness in the current life. I dont believe those sould thing or am I denying the next life. I just saying now we are living with our consciousness. god dammit y am I saying this?!w

  • your only wasting your life ciggarettes are nothing but death rolled up in paper, packaged and priced 7 bucks a box. how do i know? because when i was 14 years i watched old my mother passed away from them. think of all your ambitions and dreams you have ever set for yourself but you will never make it with a cigggeratte in your hand. you may belive that because your young you have your whole life ahead of you but you are not garenteed another moment in this world. so why are you wasting any of your time committing suiside with ciggarettes? you dont have time for that. you were ment to live your life to its true potential so dont hold back any longer. you are supposed to wake up every morning with a sense of belonging like you know the reason why you woke up this morning without any dispair or dought. evertday is filled with hope and joy you have to find yours. i really hope you can take this comment into deep consideration because this wasent an ordinary one.

  • I would stop. It's way to dangerous, like taking prescription drugs with alcohol. Not a good idea unless your suicidal. I would definitely plan on quiting

  • Smoking is unhealthy. End of story.
Ive heard different stories on birth control, its basically upsetting the natural order of things, so i can see why there are links between birth control and anything bad including heart attacks.
FYI I am not judging, it just seems to make sense. Seems like there is a link between things that a majority of people do and a disease or health problem all the time.

  • It increases the risk you'll die of a heart attack from 0% to like 1%. Big deal, you'll be fine. If smoking makes you happy, be happy. If you don't want to have babies, take birth control. I feel like most women who can afford it (irony?) take birth control, including those who smoke.

  • taking birth control is unsafe at any age as well as smoking, doing both only increases risk. risk statistically increases with age, but every human is unique. you can either decide to live with the risks or figure out why you're taking those risks and drop one or the other to lower any risk. but, of course smoking has long term effects. you also have to take your eating habits into account, as well as everything else you do. you can always think of it another way, would you rather die of complications of smoking while taking birth control, or something else. at your age, you statistically should be fine.

it's normal to try to make yourself feel better by inquiring. it's normal to smoke while on birth control. it's normal also to change the way you live for a better quality of life.

  • i've heard the same thing. i think you are ok because of your age.

i think 35 is the age they say it's crazy dangerous, so you have some time to decide what to do.

i don't think you are in any danger now, but there are some young people who do have undetected heart issues.
