  • They don’t.
Female characters do not exist unless they are attractive, if they are unattractive they are made as a joke. Male characters are made to fulfill a male power fantasy. Male characters are made for men to want to be, and female characters are made for men to want to be with.

Female consumers are willing to watch, listen, play, and consume media, of unattractive and attractive men, and of unattractive and attractive women.
Male consumers are willing to watch, listen, play, and consume media, of unattractive and attractive men, and only attractive women.

Women are so far sexualized that unattractive women simply do not exist in media, unless they are meant to be laughed at or hated.

But what I will say is I think media is far more to blame. Most men actually don’t mind an unattractive women in media, but creators still won’t put them in, and when they do - it’s seen as “brave” or “feminist” writing.

Marvel, DC comics, Hollywood, Anime, Bethesda Games, Overwatch, etc. all examples of this.

    • Meh, yes and no. I think more often than not men are physically attractive but I would be lying if I said the percentages don't have more physically attractive women in them. That said, hasn't it been studied that even women prefer seeing attractive women in media? I disagree with the last part here to an extent. While yes male characters in video games are to fulfil a male power fantasy that is the point of video games in general, even the female ones. A lot of people forget that women also have power fantasies and more often than not their power comes from their sex appeal.

I disagree that they're not willing to consume media of unattractive women. Look at movies such as Alien. Granted, Ripley isn't an "ugly" woman but she's an in-shape average woman and that movie goes down and an all-time fave for men out there.

Unattractive women certainly do exist is media, just to a lesser degree but this is becoming a trend for both sexes. Just watch some older movies and you'll notice that a lot of the women back then aren't "lookers" like the women in media today, same goes for the dudes.

Again, I'm pretty sure there was a study that showed both men and women preferred things being sold to them if a pretty woman was infront of the product, and it's not even something contained to media but expands to retail too.

      • Ripely is a fair example, my example would’ve been Jane from Deadwood - she’s filthy, dressed head to toe in western masculine wear, swears like a sailor, aggressive, drunk, and gay, yet everyone I know loved her in the show. Or Brienne from Game of Thrones. Men //will// watch and enjoy unattractive female characters, they’re just never available to be seen. Even if sexuality plays a role in female power, the women I know say they’re tired of it being the /only/ thing portrayed.

And unattractive women are at a very very less degree, I think trying to be mild about it isn’t fair. When you think of the two most popular traits of what people consider to be unattractive in people it would be obesity and age.

You can name many famous fat dudes and many famous old dudes, you’ll have a much, much, harder time doing the same for women. There are some famous men that hardly even look human anymore, Steve Buscemi ? Are you kidding me ? Find me a famous female Steve Buscemi, not likely.

Sexist dudes are making your life shit too bro, as long as they’re pissing their pants online about “women aren’t funny” “women shouldn’t be muscular” “women shouldn’t be aggressive” we’re going to be fucked

We’re missing out on seeing some badass bitches cause dudes want to jackoff in the movie theater ! Get angry !

        • There's a good few of them but for some God damn reason I can't remember them. There's obviously the heroines from slasher flicks and what not too but my mind is being a dumb dumb today.
I disagree with the idea that women are only portrayed as sexy, most of the time these "sexy women" often come with outlandish skills, it's just that being sexy is a common one, like Black Widow, Lara Croft, Samus, etc. I'd say more often than not female power characters are sexy and capable rather than just sexy.

I can definitely see your point when it comes to the "famous fat dudes vs famous fat chicks" point but I think the "famous fat" anybody thing is in a very small minority of actors now to the point that even bringing them up is a bit pointless, although valid. Ones like Steve Buscemi? Damn, ok my memory isn't doing good with names and I don't want to be an ass to these celebs but there's Tilda Swinton. One of my faves from GOT was Gwendoline Christie who although looks great off of the show looked pretty "ugly" by modern standards of television.
I will admit that there are more "ugly" male characters that are more well-known but most are from a bygone era that were acting at a time where not every actor had to be some sort of model, ya'know?

Honestly, sexist dudes aside, I'd take them over the exaggerated female power types. I can atleast brush the sexist dudes to the side and know they won't be taken seriously but if I have to get bludgeoned by another pity-part/pat yourself on the back subject for women then I'mm'a get a aneurysm.

          • There are so few that we named the same character.

You would, honestly, rather have in-real-life sexist men, than powerful female characters in fiction ?? And you don’t think that’s a problem ? Dude ???

            • I named Brienne because you brought her up and she's one of my favourite female characters that fit the topic. Lol.

No, I would rather have real life sexist men that you described than I would real life sexist women that harp on and on about this female empowerment crap. The latter is far more annoying but given far more credence.

    • Sometimes, I just like to play as a pretty woman so that I can imagine that I am one, instead of being stuck in a male body 24/7.
