Is it normal to "see" words within other words while reading?

Like: "appearance" has the words 'app', 'pear', 'ear', 'ran' and 'an' in it. This happens to me often. It makes the names of people and products easier to remember. It is also really entertaining sometimes.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

In the case the only word that is important is appear. The words you mentioned have nothing to do with the main word, and can even be distracting. It helps to see words that are relevant in other words however to better understand the roots of words and where they come from, for example in the word consequence (sequence suggests that something is happening as a result of something that already happened), and the word psychology (logy means "the study of" in Greek so literally the study of the psyche). Mal- means bad so malnutrition is bad nutrition, and precaution is about steps that someone can take to show caution before (pre-) an event or condition occurs. It's interesting to see these kinds of patterns in most words, because they are usually building on several smaller words and ideas.

  • Not everyone does this, but its a sign that you may be good at puzzles and decoding and such.
