Is it normal to see small actions on a larger scale?

I've always had this habit of analyzing small actions from others and seeing them on a larger scale.

For example: My girlfriend (now an ex) was driving to my dorm. I was in the passenger seat. We were looking for a parking spot and I saw one that was only a two minute walk from my dorm. That's pretty good here since I go to a big school. I pointed it out to her but she kept driving looking for a closer spot.

Meanwhile my mind thought this: She will leave a good thing behind with the hope that there's something better out there.

I see small actions as indicative of a person's character on a larger scale. Is that normal?

  • I don't do it but this sounds useful to me. I should try this.

  • I do it all the time. My boss had his staff photograph retaken three times and I started wondering about vanity. Over time, I spotted lots of little things like that. He's an absolutely fantastic bloke and I'd never have thought of him as vain but lots of smaller supporting incidents show that he is. Not that I treat him any differently but understanding people's motivations for things often allow you to either deal with them more easily (or you can use it as a bargaining chip).
