Sometimes if you're used to interacting with the opposite sex in only an intimate, romantic way, it's hard to switch that off. It's almost a habit. I've found myself occasionally flirting with girl friends but I'm usually aware of it after and it irritates me.
You're not consciously 'leading them on' or 'giving the wrong impression', it's just sometimes an instinctive way to behave that you have to try and avoid. Girls do it to guys too. You'll minimise the number of hearts hurt and friendships damaged if you focus all your flirting on only those you want to be with in that way.
