It sounds to me like your friend was only in it to get something out of the mother. He was only saying he cared for the kid because he felt he had to, not because they were genuine feelings.
From what it sounds like, he seems too irresponsible to be taking care of a child anyways.
Is it normal to say you are fond of the kid and don't mean it?
