Is it normal to rip my hair out?

I always knot my hair when i'm bored by twiselling it inbetween my fingers but then end up ripping it out? just tiny knots at a time but i do it really often especially on the frizzy bits that sometimes stick out on the front of my fringe. People say my hands must get bored because i always have to mess around with something like my hair. Is it normal?

  • I pull out my hair too except it's usually my eyelashes. Sometimes my eyebrows, hair on my head and (embarrassingly) even my pubes. I have done this since I was about 11 (I'm 20 now) and it is very embarrassing for me because at the end of a particularly grueling session of hair pulling, my eyelids are almost completely bald. I also rub the eyelashes that I have pulled out over my lips and sometimes place them on my tongue. I don't swallow them but I know that some people do ingest their hair. Over the years I have learned to catch myself when I start pulling and I have to consciously tell myself "Stop pulling your eyelashes out. You will hate yourself for it in the end." But a minute later, I will be right back at it. The point I'm trying to get at here is that it is an ongoing struggle to make myself aware of my behavior when it first starts and to keep forcing myself to pull my hands away from my face. If this is a behavior you have just recently started engaging in, try to nip it in the bud and stop before it gets any worse. Be aware of your every move and force yourself to pull your hands away and keep them away. I hope I helped, I know how confusing and embarrassing it can become.

  • The medical term for it is Trichotilomania. It is a type of OCD and needs some sort of treatment to help, for most people. Ever since I was a baby, I have always pulled hair out one strand at a time. I have heard some people will even eat the hair after pulling it. Anyway, I know that it is definitely a coping strategy, from my experience. Ask yourself these questions: when do you pull most often? during boredom? Stress? When you are nervous? The key to helping yourself is knowing why you feel the urges to pull in the first place. Schedule a visit with a therapist or talk to a councelor. Just get some treatment because it will get worse and your hair wont grow back fast enough to recover from the loss. Also, try twisting a rubber band in your fingers instead. Best of luck!

  • Did this as a teen. Would twist the back of my hair around a pen, silverware, or anything that wouldn't break, knot the hair, and yank it out. Did it in school, home, even in cars with my friends, although I'd just use my fingers and be sneaky about it when they were around. Sometimes, I'd pull so much and hard that I'd give myself a headache.

Got to a point where my haircut woman noticed and asked..Are you pulling your hair out back here, it's thin. She knew I was.

She made me a deal: stop pulling my hair out, and, next cut, she wouldn't wear her usual, oversized cover/smock, pretty much allowing me open view of her tits down her shirt. Said would wear a tank top, as I was usually her last appointment of the day.

I did stop, and think was going to anyway, but, next cut..Yep..The hot blonde wore her usual tight jeans, and, low-cut, very sexy, black tank top. I had amazing views as she stood in front of me, leaned in, and cut my hair.
