  • Wow, that is a lot cheaper. Even our shit supermarket-brand, British (i.e. non-Russian) vodka is much more expensive than that. The cheapest I can imagine finding would be £8 for a litre. What percent alcohol is the vodka you usually buy? Most of the vodka we can buy is 37.5% or 40%, although I doubt the price difference is because of the percentage.

Perhaps the reason for the price difference is that I believe there are laws here regulating the price of spirits by alcohol content. It's illegal to sell alcohol below a certain price because cheap alcohol encourages binge-drinking in irresponsible louts like myself :P I suspect the US doesn't have any laws like that, because of the Constitutional amendment that repealed alcohol abolision (I can't remember which number it was, but you know what I'm talking about).

    • Apologies...I can't seem to post a response...

I don't know exactly how the alcohol laws work as it's legal in the US but states and local governments can ban it. I happen to live in a dry city (no alcohol sales). I drive 12 miles to the closest liquor store. Many places have much bigger dry areas than this.

Our high alcohol content drinks are actually generally cheaper than normal beers and liquors. I can get a 198 proof 750ml grain alcohol for $15. The vodka is generally 40%. Beer is 5 to 8 % normally and the higher (12% or so) malt liquor, but some states limit beers/wines to 3.2%. Some states allow beer and wine to be sold at convenience stores while othets demand it be sold at a liquor store.
