I read a story once about a child who ate tons and tons of salt. He craved it constantly and his parents would allow him to pour it on everything and gave him salt licks to eat even. But one time he went to the hospital for something unrelated, and because they believed the salt to be so unhealthy, they would not allow him to eat the it in large quantities like that. He ended up getting very sick and died. It turned out that his body needed those huge quantities to salt to stay alive because of some kind of chemical imbalance in his body.
But I always wondered if the problem had been that he was eating so much that his body became dependent, or that the chemical imbalance was there from the beginning and his salt cravings was his body's way of satisfying it.
