Is it normal to punish dogs when they do something bad or bark

  • My dogs were all raised from tiny pups. For barking, I used a lightly rolled newspaper and swated their butts, along with a stern NO! That only lasted about 2 days. Then if it happened again, all I did was slapped my hands together loudly and said NO! That lasted for no more then a week, no more barking, problem solved.

They were all very happy, calm, good people dogs, that needed almost no correction thereafter.

    • Btw you sound nice and i don't mean to say you did anything wrong. You used commands together with a physical motion. They responded to both and you stopped the physical quickly which is the correct thing to do.

    • Like Claire said, a swat won't help train the dog. Swats are to get attention only. You can swat a dog during play because he will see your intention ahead of time but never hit an animal from anger. That will only lead to agressive behavior when they get scared.

I love dogs and I spend most of my time with them. I hope to be a vet one day, but what clair says is spot on.
