  • A small pinch works better. Dogs bite each other as punishment, a pinch simulates this.

    • No they don't, they bite out of self preservation and reflex.

Dogs are pack animals. They learn by being ignored by the pack leader. Being ostracized is a communication to them that a behavior won't be accepted in the pack. This is why sending a dog to their rug, as emokate said, is a great form of punishment, but it's also why you have to accept it back into the pack with kisses and cuddles shortly after.

She hit it right on the money.

Pinching, swatting and any physical actions will just lead to a confused and dangerous animal.

      • You need to stop thinking of your dog as a human. Dogs will hip check or slam, mount, rear up, bite, stand over, sit on, bark, snarl, growl, bare their teeth and do chin-overs (i.e., place the underside of their chin over the neck of their partner) all during normal interaction.

You like to read so here are a couple books you should read in order to understand the subject. "Animal Behaviour" by E . B. Bauer. 2007, and "If Dogs Could Talk: Exploring the Canine Mind" V. Csányi. 2000.

        • Another appropriate training option is a clicker. Use the clicker as an attention device. You could look into that.

You will never change my mind in raising a hand to a dog that isn't actively attacking me. If it is then all bets are off and I will take it down for my own safety.

          • Wait. Again hitting kids is okay. Hitting dogs is not. Also I never said to hit a dog, I said pinch. I never meant to say pinch hard but a pinch like the nip a dog would give to another dog.

        • Thanks I will check it out.

While I enjoy thinking of my dogs as companions that do have human like emotions, i do not train them as a human being.

I would smack a child on the butt, to get its attention, so I could reason with it. Not a dog who can't be reasoned with.

A dog will only consider a smack playing or aggression. It won't aide in training unless you want a dog thats scared of you. If thats your goal, please don't own dogs.

Repetition, consistancy and reinforcing of behavior is how you train a dog. It's quite simple but it takes work and most people lack the self control and patience to do it properly. That's why there are so many poorly trained animals about.

          Thanks again.

          • Abimals, attrbtion? So smacking a child on the butt that you can talk to is okay. But smacking a dog on the butt who you can't speak with and where such things are part of normal social dynamics that's a horrible act. You need to reevaluate how you treat children.

            • Yes if a child is about to run into the street or do something dangerous a smack is appropriate. To get it's attention only.

              • Hit kids not dogs. Right. Remind me not to let you babysit.

              • Yeah, you totally can't use your voice...

Or if you're close enough to fuckin hit them, grabbing them and pulling them away from the dangerous situation totallg isn't an option...

I'm with you on the dog stuff, but fuck...I hope you're not around kids.

Do you hit adults to get their attention?
