It is called trichotillomania, often associated with low serotonin levels, depression and other mental illnesses, but can present alone.
I have it too. I will find wiry hairs, pull them out, run my fingers along it and sometimes chew on it. I can't help it. I've tried not to do it to avoid getting headaches and hurting my scalp, but I always find myself coming back to it.
It can be controlled with different kinds of therapy and low doses of antidepressants.
Is it normal to pull my hair out?
