No. I took a trip up into the mountains and fell in love with the place so I stayed. Every morning on my way into the town center I would walk past an army base and say hi to the guards standing outside. If those guys knew I was a US veteran they would have grabbed me quick. It was not easy to blend in but it was essential. If they found out what I was having done to my passport to give the appearance that I was not staying beyond their 90-day limit on foreigners I'd probably still be there locked up in a prison. The 'American spy' issue is a real thing. I did get accosted by the traffic police once for taking pictures.
