Is it normal to pretend to be a diffrent nationailty

Is it normal that a friend of mine pretends to be from a diffrent country, that they fake the accent (All the f*kin' Time) tells people he's from that place, and wears clothes and listens to music with this language ect, even though he has never been here and it seems almost random his choice of country.

( On the plus side they learned the language which is cool)

Yeah, why not? If one can choose their gender, why not national identity as well..

It's not normal to live a lie.

Why can't you just be yourself and accept your real nationality?

    Why though?

I guess people pretend to be a different nationality, because they think they aren't good enough, and that they will be more interesting, more likable and generally more exotic and unique if they pretend to be someone different. I think I probably entertained pretended I was English, or German for a short while when I was in high school, but I'm one of those people who is an awful liar, and lies feel even worse than my less than stellar foriegn accents. Sometimes I will do a Scottish accent, and that rather entertains other Americans, but I would probably implode into a dense, little blackhole compromised entirely out of my own shame if a real Scottish person heard my fake accent.

To be completely honest I have found that my own natural Southern/Texas accent works well enough. Although I want to specify that I was raised in Houston, not Dallas. I've also spent a good number of years living in various parts of the Deep South.

I find the accent in Delaware to be rather strange, but light enough that it doesn't annoy me.

Either this or they dislike their original nations culture and want to dissociate fron it this way

When I was in school my entire circle of friends were people who were obsessed with really niche things. Obscure bands, weird political ideologies, random third-world countries or whatever the fuck else. If you guys are still in high school I'd have to say it's not that abnormal, even if he's taken it to a weird extreme.

Just out of curiosity, which country is he doing?

Was one of them Kazakhstan? That one was popular at my school, courtesy of Borat.

    Is it Japan?

For a highschool student although this isn’t “normal” it’s a phase some people go through and normally grow out of after graduation.

I'm my town, I used to know pale skinned Puerto Ricans who were born in Puerto Rico, had Puerto Rican biological parents, and spoke Spanish, yet they would rarely acknowledge they're Hispanic and they pretended to be from Ireland, Russia, Germany, or Japan. It was really pathetic.

When I was living in Houston my ex, and I met this weird, little person working at a store in the mall that sold all of these As Seen On TV things, and this person was obsessed with Japan, Japanese things, Japanese culture, and anime.

When I was in high school, we called those people Weeaboos. They'd always mix in badly pronounced Japanese words in each of their sentences and only talked about Japan, Japanese culture, manga, and anime. They just couldn't talk about any other subjects. Some of them would also dress like, talk like and act like their favorite anime characters or even pretend they were Japanese. I like anime and manga, but I was never on that level of odd. XD

I used to act like that, I eventually grew out of that. Now I just research the culture rather than acting like something I'm not.

        Weebs are cringy anyways.

Heck I've even learnt something about the history behind the feudal era.

I'm not a Colombian drug lord, but I play one on tv! Just kidding, but I wish I had that kinda money... what?

Oh yeah, weebs are hella cringey. The cringe is mighty powerful with those weebs. I honestly think weebs could weaponize the cringe. When people don't realize how cringey they are it only makes others cringe harder.

I saw this Kurdish comedian talking about how he would lie to women that he was Italian, put on an accent and say his name was Roberto to appear sexier.

He almost got caught once because when he got back to his one-night-stand’s house her roommate’s Italian boyfriend was there, however when the two guys were left alone together it turned out the boyfriend was also Arabic.

How long are we talking here? Pretty awesome and not too crazy if he did that while learning a new language in a month or so and then came back. Other than that there's something going on...

I'm Irish, but spent a year in Venezuela and I did everything I could do to blend in and look like a local. I shaved most of my hair off including my arms, dyed the little I had left on my head a darker color, never wore shorts, only wore shirts and shoes bought from the area, wore shades to cover my blue eyes, other stuff too. I never thought of living here in the US as a Venezuelan though. That would be stupid. I think your friend is looking for special attention.

I would ask the same. I'd understand if it was an Islamic country but Latin.. They wear shorts in all the North Africa, even in Egypt.. Maybe the guy is 60+yo..?

I lived in the State of Merida. Men don't wear shorts. It would be like you wearing speedos at your local supermarket. I also spent a couple of months in the State of Zulia where it's very hot. 90's even at Christmas. No shorts on men there either.

No. I took a trip up into the mountains and fell in love with the place so I stayed. Every morning on my way into the town center I would walk past an army base and say hi to the guards standing outside. If those guys knew I was a US veteran they would have grabbed me quick. It was not easy to blend in but it was essential. If they found out what I was having done to my passport to give the appearance that I was not staying beyond their 90-day limit on foreigners I'd probably still be there locked up in a prison. The 'American spy' issue is a real thing. I did get accosted by the traffic police once for taking pictures.

Seems kind of odd. Does he have a reason for this? Is he just fascinated with said country? Either way, that's no reason to lie or put on a fake persona. Does he just think it's funny to do that?

I just looked up what half African American half Native American people look like and found an article on a guy who thought he was half white half Native American. It turned out his “Native American” father was really half African American half Chinese but after being involved in gangs and spending time in jail he crafted a new identity as a Native American man. Wild.
