It seems to me like you do this just because lots of other people seem poorer than you, and you'd like to fit in with them. You don't want the image of the stereotypical "rich kid", who everyone is jelous of and doesn't have any friends other than other rich kids. Because you don't fit in with that image, you don't feel like a rich kid at all. You feel like a regular kid, who happens to have a bit more money than most of his friends. So you downplay it in order to fit in. Seems normal to me.
