Is it normal to pretend my life is worse than it actually is ?

I'm not exactly rich but I'm definitely not poor or impoverished either, and yet sometimes I wish I was. Whenever people ask about my life I always downplay everything. I say I live in a very small house and that I wear the same clothes every week because I can't afford anything else. Truth is I live in a huge mansion of a house and have plenty of beautiful clothes in my dresser. I feel like I do this because then all my achievements are that much more impressive. But I really don't know. I actually wish I was dirt poor and came from a crappy background, and I don't know why. What's wrong with me ?

It seems to me like you do this just because lots of other people seem poorer than you, and you'd like to fit in with them. You don't want the image of the stereotypical "rich kid", who everyone is jelous of and doesn't have any friends other than other rich kids. Because you don't fit in with that image, you don't feel like a rich kid at all. You feel like a regular kid, who happens to have a bit more money than most of his friends. So you downplay it in order to fit in. Seems normal to me.

Maybe you want people to feel sympathy for you?
Anyways you should feel grateful for your life right now because most people who are poor want to live like you.

I hate liars. I wonder who else hates liars? I'm sure it's not too many people...

Switch places with a poor kid who looks identical to you. My research indicates that wacky Shakespearean hijinks should ensue.

Seems like you are board. I got way to smart, honors and accolades at a nice college and then. When I realized how easy everything is, to succeed in life, I felt bad. That I can do this and still have time to get cranked up on bad things. But I really couldn’t. So I started living ‘down’ to their life expectations. Don’t do it. I could not live ‘down’ to their lives any more than they could live ‘up’ to mine. In short I awoke from a comma 2 months post from my last memory. I got saved, born again, holy ghost filled, and am ‘SO’ much happier than I ever was.
Skip the comma and just go the GOD and ask him what he would have you do. I’m sure the money you’re talking about would be helpful in some project.

  • Yeah you just want people to feel sorry for you. Sad but true. We all do it without realizing it.

Do you do this because you want people to feel sorry for you, or do you just want to experience what it's like to have to struggle to survive?
