I don't think we know enough about them to know whether this is an illness or just wickedness. As devilla already said, I think putting them in prison is a waste of time. I'd have them in secure psychiatric units and would analyse every last detail of their lives and thoughts. If there is a way to reduce or prevent paedophilia, we should be focussing all our efforts on finding out how we do that.

Pity pedophiles, but not child molesters.
I guess that's what we need to research. And if castration is really the only way, then - as a society - we have to decide whether to do that.
