Please DO NOT pick your cat up like this. It's such an idiotic, barbaric and inhumane way of handling an animal. The animal is an adult and is heavy, lifting it in this manner can actually hurt them and make them think they're in danger. Just use common sense and some respect for animals please.
It's not a 1 pound kitten anymore, don't do it. Ever.
When I pick my cat up, I scoop my arm under his bum and support his front end with my other arm, and hoist him so his paws are hanging over my shoulder. This is extremely comfortable for a cat, and probably one of the best ways to handle them in a non-threatening and comfortable manner.
