Is it normal to obsess over being skinny?

I'm a very skinny girl- about 5'5" and 105 lbs.
I do eat (not eating disorders here!) just very, very healthy.
Almost too healthy.. I'm a vegetarian, but lately I've been told I'm going overboard with it. I complain to my boyfriend after every meal (even if it's just fruit and hummus) about how I feel disgusting.

I'm almost so worried I'm considering not having kids... and I LOVE kids and have dreamed about being a mom my whole life!

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • A person can eat and still have an eating disorder. Based on what you've written, you sound like you are in the beginning stages of developing an eating disorder.

  • being skinny, especially THAT skinny isn't healthy. A strong gust of wind could practically take you away. It is sexier to be healthy, not borderline starving. I would recommend if you want to improve your health and appearance you should lift some weights. Eat organic meat, no processed and lots of organic vegetables and brown rice, no gluten. If you do this for a month you will definitely look and feel better.

  • Eating doesnt change the fact that this may be anorexia. Like the first comment says, anorexic people just eat very little food, and your description makes it sound like you may have an eating disorder.

  • Im sure someone will also mention, it will be silly to worry whether or not to have children when you period is in danger of not visiting, in reaction of mal nutrition.
No I guess in my opinion it is not normal, because normal things that lead to un normal things are also not normal, chain reaction.

Focus on compromising, and not being strict, and talk to a Woman that is not obsessed with her weight, Id hate to tell you to talk to friends and gain a diet buddy.

This could be like the Theory i have about smokers, that end up with cancer. When they still have the chance to quit, that moment where they realize "hey i dont need to smoke cause im nervous, im going to start chewing gum" that moment when someone is not addicted yet but close enough to being concerned is; the window of opportunity to change.

  • better watch out for the creeping weight gain from being a vegetarian then. One day you will get hungry and forget about being skinny... .one day you will be fat and wish you would of just stopped caring so much that is the kind of thinking that will make you gain .

  • Sounds like you eat less than 1,200 calories a day and I have a friend whose vegan and she eats around 1,000 a day and shes very unhealthy even though she thinks she is. I bet you're not healthy and that you arent eating enough. Obsessing over being skinny is normal, but being underweight is very unhealthy.

  • I study mental health and my last presentation was on eating disorders. You should have a chat with someone about it. Parents, teachers, friends, counsellors. Anyone who can offer positive support.

  • The fact that you eat doesn't necessarily mean you don't have an eating disorder. Even people with anorexia eat, they just eat very little. You might be just starting to develop anorexia so it'd be a good idea to talk to a therapist about it before it gets any worse.

There's also orthorexia nervosa, which isn't officially a medical condition yet but a lot of doctors think it should be. It's an eating disorder that involves obsessing about eating healthy foods to the point where this obsession negatively affects your life. It sounds a lot like what you describe except orthorexics generally don't care about being skinny, they just want to be healthy.
