This is rather normal, people want to see certain things in people because it easier to cope or deal with. For example when you look at the World Wars many people like to look at the Germans like they are the bad guys. This isn't true many young men as young as 16 were sent to fight and die against their enemies even though they wanted nothing to do with it. And many Nazi soldiers were actually nice to the people they occupied but if we recognized that fact it would make fighting them look less noble than it actually was and people don't want to realize that.
