It's totally normal! What parent could possibly want their child not to be healthy and have a normal life? I work with people who are "retarded" as you put it (which by the way, is a HORRIBLE word especially considering you're so outraged by someone not wanting a child that is that way!) and some of them are completely amazing and I'd be proud to call them my children, but if I had a magic wand and I could make it that they were "normal" and could have "normal" lives, (I put "normal" in inverted commas because what is "normal"?) then I would. I'd love if they could be accepted and loved by everyone in the same way I love them. So if I had a choice, I wouldn't want "special" children. That being said, if I was pregnant and found out I was having a "special" child, I wouldn't get rid of it, I'd love him or her just the same.
Can't blame anyone for wanting healthy children though!
"Retarded" means slow. Would it be wrong to say that some of these "special" (as you call them) children, grasp concepts slower than "normal" children? It's not wrong to use the word "retarded." It was just warped out of context by children throwing the word around when it's not applicable.

As I said, I work with these people who are "retarded", and some of them aren't "slow", as you put it. They don't grasp things slower than other people, they just grasp them in a different way, not a slower or less superior one. "Retarded" is used for any child (or adult) who doesn't think exactly the same way we do. That's wrong. Just because someone is different doesn't mean they should be tarred with the same brush as everyone else who happens to be different!
