Is it normal to not want babies when everyone around you does?

  • I totally feel you! I'm 21 and it seems like everyone is in a rush to grow up, while I'm just here still feeling like a kid haha. I don't know who's right or wrong or if there even is a right or a wrong way to do it, but personally, I'm not in a rush to grow up and start a family right now. Being young and free allows you to chase goals that would be hard to chase otherwise.

As soon as you "settle down" and have kids, you're viewed differently in the world and your role is different. It's no longer about you and people don't really look to help YOU anymore, they look for YOU to help your kids and that is really your #1 priority.
The priorities of a 23 year old student/unmarried person without kids are very different than a 23 year old who has kids. Guess which one is expected to be more "grown up"?

I have nothing against people who have kids young, but personally, I only want to have kids if I feel like I can provide very well for them. Lots of people have kids in their early 20's (or teens), but they struggle to support the family financially. Although in their mind, it's not that big a deal.... to a kid growing up, I think it's important to have a clean, safe, and comfortable living environment as well as to have full healthcare, higher education, and a sense of a secure family. Most people can't offer this until they are in their late 20's or 30's at least.

So basically, I totally hear what you are saying.
