Human mouths are loaded with all sorts of viruses and bacteria, and putting your lips on something moist that someone else has just had their lips on is a viable path for transmission of those bacteria and viruses between the two of you.
So I agree with your mother: it's best to avoid sharing drinking containers with people you aren't very close to.
Family members are different. If nobody in your family is kissing or sharing drinking containers with people outside your family, I see little point in being obsessive about this, since you'll most likely catch whatever they have by some other transmission path in any case.
I still feel heavily disgusted by sharing with my family or even with a romantic partner in most situations. Sometimes I'm able to somewhat ignore it and push it to the back of my head but this clearly causes some problems since friends and even family end up thinking I'm surly and that I don't like them.
IIN to not share the same glass or bottle with anyone else?

But, why also romantic partners? You get their spit in your mouth when you kiss them, anyway.
