I harass my friends about being lazy with slang all the time, because I know that they know perfectly well how the English language works. I am a bit less finicky about texting, seeing as it is sometimes necessary to conserve characters so as to complete the message. Abbreviations, contractions, and the removal of apostrophes from said contractions are the easiest ways to shorten the message while still preserving its meaning and comprehensibility.
Applying these shortcuts within the context of an e-mail or instant message (unless the aforementioned character limit applies) is what truly annoys me. If they have the typing skills and education to write properly, they should sure as heck do so. It shows that they put some thought into their reply, rather than just skimming and typing back "LOL".
