Is it normal to not know what do with your life?

I'm 18 and I have no idea what I should be doing with my life. I'd just like to have a job that pays a livable wage. I don't mind living cheaply. The thing is, I don't know whether to go to a university or a technical school (or both). My dad is pressuring me to go to a 4 year college (he thinks people that go to a 2 year school can't make a livable wage easily), but I don't know. I'm not really good at anything. Not the brightest person around. I don't know if I'm even going to get any scholarship money.

Is It Normal?

  • From what I read, a lot of young people are getting out of college with little hope of employment and huge loans that need repayment, these days.
Starting out your life with a 6 figure debt really doesn't make much sense unless you have chosen your education extremely well, with an eye towards future employment. Then comes the problem of having a job or profession one hates, just to make money, so going to work each day is torture.
I believe it would behoove a young person today to find something that they would enjoy as a profession and go from there. There are jobs out there that begin in the early morning hours and by 10AM or noon, you're finished for the day, leaving plenty of time for other things, like writing, art or sports. There are rewarding jobs that help others, and though low paying, they can be extremely rewarding and that in itself can be a huge dividend.
Building things, designing things or repairing things are also rewarding jobs.
It's just something you are going to have to put some thought into, and decide if the education is worth the rewards, or if a more simple life will satisfy and reward you.
But, you know what? If you find, down the road, you've made a mistake, hell, you can try something else. Nothing is set in stone and there are always choices.
    Good luck.

  • Work hard. A career assessment might also help, you can find those online or at a nearby uni. You shouldn't be so pessimistic. Getting a job is becoming harder and harder, you should study to get a stable job.

  • You're only eighteen, don't stress about the future just yet. Do something you enjoy, if you want to start school somewhere cheap, make sure it's got classes and programs you're interested in. Try getting a scholarship to help with some of the expenses. If you have hobbies you enjoy, maybe try branching out from them? You still have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do with your life, don't worry. We've all been there at some point, and many people are still there regardless of their age. What matters the most is that you find something you enjoy doing, and take it from there.

  • just chill go with the flow you cant worry to much or you will never make the right decision you got to do what you want to do with your life dont just jump into something because your being pressured. do you have any intrests? what type of work can you see yourself doing?

my advice go some where cheap like a community college take your basic classes while exploring the more in depth options to you find something you like because no doubt you will probly change your mind on what you want to do once you get out there its all trial and error you find where you fit trust me. it wouldnt hurt to speak to a guidence consoler or teacher to get a professional and more personal opinion on this subject.... what ever you decided good luck!

  • I don't have any advice as I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, just one year older. All I can say is that you're not alone.
