Is it normal to not have had a pelvic exam?

I'm a 22 yr old and I've never had a pelvic exam because I've been told that you don't need one till you're 25 or something unless you are sexually active or you suspect something is wrong. Well I know that I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, but that has nothing to do with the area the exam would cover. I'm also a virgin. Many girls near my age have nearly had heart attacks when I've told them and they make a big deal for me to go, but I don't know how much I believe them. Should I or shouldn't I go?
