Is it normal to not have a period for six years?

I'll give some basic info first.

I'm 24 years old, a virgin, asexual (non-sexual), active (kayaking and surfing), and not on any sort of birth control. My period was pretty stable in high school, that was until graduation, when I noticed the number of days I had it were becoming shorter and shorter. First it was five days, then three, then two, then none at all. I thought nothing of it, and continued on my life in college. Years past, and I was reminded of my lack of a period by my roommate, who needed some girl things, but I had none to give her. Saying I didn't have a period. After some explaining, she got really worried and said I should have gone to a doctor the first year it stopped. It's just not normal for a woman my age to not have anything at all. It could mean I could never have children either. Though that's not a loss, as I've never wanted children.

Thing is, is it THAT unusual? I've been told to go get checked, but with the bad economy and being a student (and we all know college kids are the poorest of the poor), I couldn't get checked even if I wanted to. So do any of you ladies out there have any advice? Have you heard of this kind thing before, and what did they do about it? If it means taking medication, what kind and will it be expensive or take me away from school? I can't compromise my classes and future career for medical costs. They are way too important. Thanks in advance!

  • It's really pretty normal. Especially If you are very physically active.
You might just want to make sure you don't have cysts or fibroids, but if you're not in pain then I wouldn't be too concerned.
Just get a quick check at a womens clinic. It's worth it and it will put your mind at ease either way.

    • This sounds like it might be the cause. I'm very active, especially in winter. I got an appointment in a week, so...hope it's just too much exercise and not something serious. Thanks for the reply.

  • Forget the cancer theorists. A girl I went out with didn't have a period for five years because she was underweight and a gymnast a friend of mine went out with never had one (same reason). It's not just weight that can affect this. It's not abnormal but it wouldn't do any harm to find out the reason you're not having periods.

    • You know what, this sounds a lot like me. I am outdoors a lot, especially in the winter time. I'm not underweight though, but I do a lot of strenuous activity.

  • You can't be in college without health insurance. They give it to you if you don't have it. Go see the clinic at your school for details and go to the doctor. You probably have cancer

  • You can get cancer if you don't have periods. I was told this by a doctor after not having one for a year. Had to get on birth control to make my body have them again. Finally they restarted on their own.

  • I think it's because you don't have that much body fat (Regardless of how heavy you are, exercise gets rid of a lot of fat, which has a role in giving you your hormone cycle... somehow).

Hope the appointment goes well, OP!

  • I think you might be infertile. I'd go to a doctor because there's a chance that what ever you do have might affect more than your reproductive parts.

Your health is more important than your education.

  • if you are really active then its normal. I hate doctors AND kids, so if you feel there's nothing wrong with you for all that time I wouldn't worry about it either.
