I think what you're experiencing is fairly normal and it's nice that you hope that it gets better. I think it would improve if you tried to shift the focus of conversations with her from yourself to her. Start taking an interest in her world (if it's boring, write it down so you don't forget it). Do it out of politeness and courtesy. Lay of asking her for advise for a few months, that's not the only thing that mothers are good for.
