My kids aren't at that age yet, but I will be telling them they ought to get jobs as soon as they are legally able. We could afford to give them all an allowance whilst they are studying, but we won't. My husband and I both did very demanding degrees and we both still managed to fund ourselves and it did us the world of good to stand our own two feet. Granted, we didn't have the option of parent funding anyway since neither of us come from money, but I don't think it would have done me any good to be handed that money.
I do have little nest eggs for each of my kids. They are fairly small now but by the time they hit their 20s it should be enough for them each to put down a deposit on a house, or start a business or whatever. They don't know about it and I'm not telling them until I feel they are ready for it.
