that's a bit strange because college guys are young and generally in shape, take care of their appearance, have good style, etc. if you meant fat balding middle aged men then I could see your point, but not really on an average college campus.
I don't think that's necessarily true. When I was at university, most guys looked pretty average. There were some who were like you say, working out and keeping their looks up, but most were just meh average. Not outright ugly by any means, but not the kind of guys I'd make a beeline for.
So yeah, I can kind of relate to this post. Personally I don't think it's shallow to be somewhat selective about wanting partners who take care of themselves. I think it's only "shallow" when you're REALLY picky, rude about it, and have unrealistically narrow standards.
