  • I actually feel qualified to answer this one, for once. I don't believe in ghosts either. I live alone in an old, converted church and for the first three months here, strange things happened. Candles got knocked over, I had the sensation of a presence, doors opened and closed by themself. There were noises, strange changes in temperature. If I got a takeaway, the delivery driver more often than not commented that it's "spooky" when they got inside. Certain delivery drivers who've been here before refuse to come in for a second time - I still have to go outside and across the street to collect my meal from their car.

There was one night in particular. I'm not going to tell you what happened because I don't want to freak you out any more than you already are doing. But something happened that made me resolve to leave in the morning and never come back. In the morning, I still felt very ill at ease but I generally refuse to be forced into something I don't want to do.

I resolved instead to look for patterns in when things happened. As I said, I don't believe in ghosts but there's nothing to say my beliefs are actual fact. Within months, I'd spotted definite patterns. If I spoke about the issues on the phone to someone while in the church, or if I lit candles, then I could expect something to happen (generally the same day). I stopped doing both of those things and the problems went away completely.

Although I still don't believe in ghosts, I have a huge cellar which used to be the catacombs of the church. To get down there I have to lift a floor panel and then walk down old, stone steps. In all the time I've lived here, I've never lifted that panel and I refuse to go down there. Maybe one day? After all, it no longer gives me a shock that the first thing I see every morning when waking up is four gargoyles looking through my roof-windows at me.

I'm not suggesting ghosts exist. For me or for you. But whether my problems were spiritual, psychosomatic or whether there's some scientific basis that I have yet to identify, I found a solution by analysing them and avoiding certain behaviours. I'm not sure this will work for you but it's worth a try as it really did work for me.

      • Weird thing is, I actually did lift the catacomb floor for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Looking down there scared me all over again. It's like a dungeon.
