I don't think there's anything wrong with what you're doing, I also don't think people who want for someone attractive are necessarily shallow either. You're shallow if appearance is the most important thing or one of, but physical attraction is just a piece of the full package. Sometimes you just can't force it, I know I've had times where I felt I would be good with someone but there was just something not there, it would have made me very uncomfortable to try and not fair to the other person.
In your case it sounds like you're pretty happy with the way things are going, people may give you shit about it but fuck them anyway. Back in high school I dated a guy who wasn't very conventionally attractive but he was a bloody genius and I found myself very attracted to him. Had to deal with people making their rude little comments all the time about how nice I am to date someone ugly... x.x People are weird, yo.
